All Lannister Deaths – A Quick Recap before Game of Thrones Season 8

After 7 glorious seasons, the various houses in Westeros have been dwindled down to a few people. House Lannister started off as one of the strongest in the realm, and still is, considering the fact that Cersei Lannister is sitting on the Iron Throne. However, over time, the House has suffered a few serious blows in the forms of major deaths, and the plundering of Casterly Rock. In this article, let’s take a quick look at all Lannister deaths before Game of Thrones Season 8 premiers!

King Joffrey Baratheon, Season 3

Although a Baratheon to the world, King Joffrey was a Lannister through and through. His death comes during his wedding to Margaery Tyrell, at the hand of Oleana Tyrell. However, as no one except the Tyrell’s know of this fact, the blame falls on Tyrion, who had handed Joffrey the cup of poisoned wine from which he drank.

The domino effect of his death:
Petyr Baelish uses this opportunity to orchestrate Sansa Stark’s rescue. She leaves King’s Landing to joi Littlefinger on the journey to The Eyrie. At the same time, a trial is held at King’s Landing and Tywin Lannister sentences Tyrion to death for the murder of the king. Ultimately, Jaime sets Tyrion free, who avenges this injustice by killing his father. Finally, Tommen is crowned King and Margaery is married to him in the future.

Tywin Lannister, Season 3

Tywin Lannister’s death comes at the hand of his son, Tyrion Lannister, while he was in the privy. Tyrion and Tywin talk about the latter’s hatred towards his own son and Tyrion’s love for Shae before the former pulls the trigger on a crossbow, killing the Hand of the King.

The domino effect of his death:
Tywin Lannister is one of the most feared men in the kingdom and his death takes away some of the Lannister power. Moreover, after his death, the Faith gained power and eventually imprisoned Cersei, which is something that would not have happened had the Lannister patriarch been alive.

Myrcella Lannister, Season 5

One of the few innocent people in the realm, Myrcella Lannister dies at the hand of Ellaria Sand. This happens because Ellaria seeks revenge for the death of her lover, Oberyn Martel, who died in season 3 during Tyrion’s trial. Oberyn, chosen as Tyrion’s champion, fought and lost against the Mountain, which led to Ellaria Sand’s ongoing desire for revenge against the Lannisters.

The domino effect of her death:
Myrcella’s death brings Ellaria and the Sand Snakes further under Cersei’s spotlight. In Season 7, she kills Ellaria’s daughter the same way Ellaria killed Myrcella, and condemns her to watch.

Lancel Lannister, Season 6

Lancel Lannister was Cersei’s former lover, and this act eats away at his soul until he turns to the Faith to assuage his guilt. The Faith punishes Cersei for charges of incest, and eventually also punishes Margaery. When Margaery, the members of the Faith, and the rest of the Tyrells are gathered at the Sept of Baelor, Cersei uses wildfire to burn them all. Lancel Lannister also dies during this time.

The domino effect of his death:
His death marks the end of the Faith. Cersei now has no one to fear but herself. Tommen Lannister, Season 6 Distraught over the death of his wife, Margaery, Tommen jumps out of a window and kills himself.

Cersei Lannister is now the Queen of the Realm, and is officially the main human obstacle in Daenerys Targaryen’s way towards the Iron Throne. Cersei and Jaime are now the only two surviving members of this great House.
