Money Heist: Top 8 moments from the “Royal Mint of Spain Heist” (Season 1 and 2)

If there is any TV show that has created a worldwide buzz in the last couple of years, then it is Money Heist (La Casa de Papal). Yes, it is yet reach to the popularity of Game of Thrones, but it is right up there when it comes to the most popular shows you can watch. The Spanish TV series first aired on a local TV channel and OTT platform but Netflix soon made it their baby. Ever since that, it has seen tremendous success around the globe.

The first two seasons of the show are all about the heist of The Royal Mint of Spain, the national mint of the country! Yes, you read it right, the national bank of the country! This is a clear case of robbers going for one grand robbery that yields enough riches to last their whole life.

Helmed by the “Professor” (controlling the group from outside the bank), a team of Dali-mask-wearing robbers enter the bank to loot it over the course of a few days. They have multiple hostages, including some high-profile citizens, to keep them safe during their stint. An intelligent plotline with surprising twists, and a brilliant cast to deliver all the scenes in the best possible manner gifted us some unforgettable moments.

The best thing about Money Heist is that there are scenes that make you go “Wait, what?” and also those that make you all welled up. Here, we look at some of the best moments from Money Heist from season 1 and season 2 that had a lasting impression on us.

Best moments from Money Heist!

Denver saves Monica

best moments from Money heist

Stockholm Syndrome! You might have heard of this condition where a hostage develops feelings for his/her captor(s). And this is exactly what happens here when Monica falls in love with one of her captors, Denver, and he ends up developing feelings for her as well. When Berlin (the group leader) orders Denver to kill Monica, he starts contemplating what the best move is and ends up doing something unexpected.

Instead of killing her, Denver shoots Monica on her thigh (with her permission, mind you!) and keeps her safe in one of the vaults, without anyone’s knowledge. He takes care of her and both of them fall in love with each other. Well, that’s one way of doing that! This has to be one of the best moments from Money Heist, as it is one of the few heart-touching moments in the show.

Bella Ciao

best moments from money heist

It would be safe to say that even if someone hasn’t watched Money Heist, he/she must have definitely heard the song, Bella Ciao! It first appears on the show in episode 11 of Season 1, when Moscow finally finds earth (mud) while digging an escape route in the vault for days! Moscow starts singing the song and the rest of the robbers (Nairobi, Berlin, Denver, Helsinki, Tokyo and others) join him to celebrate the one thing that has gone right for them up until now. Till then, they had screwed up multiple times even with a full-proof plan laid out by the Professor, thanks to two things – their personal egos and the cleverness of certain hostages.

So yeah, this is one moment when you finally feel good for them. (Yes, they are robbing a bank but they also are our protagonists, for god’s sake!) Ever since then, the song has been the talk of the town, making it one of the best moments from Money Heist.

Raquel pulling out the gun on Salva

raquel and salva

Raquel Murillo, the officer who is the in-charge of the case, is having an affair with Salvador “Salva” Martin, a stranger she met in a bar. But soon, her colleague warns her that this stranger is somehow linked to the ongoing robbery. Even though Raquel does not believe her partner at first, she does have her doubts and that’s when she pulls out the gun on her lover.

Well, the catch is, only we, the viewers, know that Salva is none other than “Professor”! It surely was a moment that scared the bejesus out of us, thinking about how things will turn out if Raquel finds out the identity of the master himself.

Tokyo thrown out of the Bank

Tokyo thrown out of the bank

When you assemble a team of robbers who do not really have any past connections, things are sure to go out of proportion sooner rather than later. With a hard nut like Berlin and a hothead like Tokyo in there together and so much pressure on them, it was surprising to see that we had to wait till the second episode of the second season to truly see a showdown between the two. Tokyo starts questioning the leadership of Berlin and tries to jeopardize the heist to which Berlin reacts in the most bizarre and unexpected manner. He ties her on a rolling ambulance bed and throws her out of the bank to be arrested by the police.

This was surely one of the best moments from Money Heist that made us scratch our heads, thinking about what was going through Berlin’s mind! That is one way to punish one of your own kind!

Arturo turned into a human bomb

Arturo bomb

Well, Berlin punished one of his own gang this way, so just think about what he does to others who do something bad to him!? He turns them into a human bomb! Hey, not kidding! Many would say Arturo deserved it (he did, to be honest) because he irritated the hell out of everyone during the heist. Even though his intentions were good to start with (of saving the hostages), his true colours were seen by everyone when his selfish nature came out repeatedly.

He tries to outsmart the robbers and ends up being the cause of death for Oslo! Berlin had to show the hostages who the boss is and he does that by strapping a bomb to Arturo. He then warns the other hostages about how their lives depend on what Arturo does. One bad move and KABOOM!

Raquel finding who the Professor is

raquel finding out

We mentioned how Raquel almost finds out who the Professor is in the first season. Well, she does have that realization in one of their meetings at the bar and finally comes to terms that her lover was the mastermind of the heist she has been investigating all this while! She has multiple flashbacks in her mind and is just left speechless, when everything makes sense to her! Breaking Bad. Hank. Walter White. Ring any bells?

Raquel switching sides

Being the master puppeteer that the Professor is, he has one last move up his sleeve after being caught by Raquel. When she confronts him at his warehouse, he ties her up and makes her understand the purpose behind the robbery. He tells her how he is in love with her even though his #1 rule for the whole heist was not to get emotionally attached to anyone. He bares his heart out to her and Raquel understands, to everyone’s surprise. When all the dust settles down, they both kiss. And that’s where a cop turned into a criminal and the heist continues to be on track.

Berlin’s Sacrifice

best moments from money heist

Berlin was one character that generated a mix of emotions in every one who watched Money Heist. We despised him for his cockiness, got impressed by his astuteness, empathised with him over his past and felt sad for his terminal illness. However, one thing that no one expected from him was him being sacrificial.

In the final moments of “The Royal Mint of Spain Heist”, Berlin stays back and fights off the cops in order to buy time for his pals to escape safely. He dies in the process, obviously! Well, some might say that he did this because he was going to die anyway in a few months’ time, but it sure does take a brave heart to lay your life for someone else! No one can argue about this being one of the best moments from Money Heist from the first couple of seasons.

Well, that’s a wrap on the top moments of the first heist in the TV series, Money Heist. Stay tuned to get a list of top moments from Money Heist from the rest of the two seasons shortly.
