Need for Speed™ Heat title is really fun. Mixes together some elements from Pro Street with the daytime Street Racing. You drive around in lap based circuits for huge payments. That element of the game has a greater focus on getting awards for upgrading parts and new cars. When the nighttime elements hit its like Underground or Most Wanted all over again. The driving works extremely well and the cars feel fun to drive. Much more fun to control than the 2015 NFS game. There’s also a respect meter, the more you build it up the more you access you have to story missions and better parts for your car. NFS is a fun racer that really focuses on the speed access more than anything else. While also adding on some different elements that add on to the challenge for NFS. There’s a lot to see and do in this NFS with many different fun elements to keep you coming back for more.
The base game of Need for Speed™ Heat is good at its core. It’s an improvement over the last few releases and one of the better entries in the franchise, even if it doesn’t quite match up with the best. After 100~ hours with this title on “orange steam”, I’ve got a want to share feedback for the devs and help prospective buyers be aware of the game and what it’s shortcomings are.
This all being said, there’s a few things holding it back, nearly entirely, from greatness.
1) Variety in Need for Speed™ Heat: The races greatly lack variety. They’re largely all street races with circuits. Not many drag races. None off-road. The environments are samey. Etc.
2) Replayability – Need for Speed™ Heat: Horrendous. The best races to play are always the same, rather then cycling, even though the game does lower the reward to recently played races. The rewards should all be static based off your level and multiplied by heat in my opinion, with a huge focus on circuit races as is, it’s sorely needed to have more variety in what races we’re on.
3) Car balance – Need for Speed™ Heat: There’s one vehicle that objectively beats everything. It’s the god car. Even with mods, no car can compete. There should be better trade offs and choices. Or at least balance them all roughly equally. GTA handles this very well and it isn’t even a racing game on its focus.
4) Visual style. It’s both stunning and horrendous. There’s a filter applied over the graphics that turn it into what can only be described as a “unnatural”. I think the game’s rendering, models, textures, etc all look stunning aside from that.
5) Post-launch support. Normally, considering the circumstances the world is in when the game was handed over to Critereon, I’d be more lenient, but we have recieved zero word on the game’s future and 2 updates, one of which was very minor. I would like them to at least outline a roadmap, if any, for the games future. Right now, the title has sit abandoned since March. For a GAAS game. That’s concerning.
All in all, it’s worth the price on a sale. It is fun. It does a lot well, namely racing and progression before you hit the cap. The customization is powerful and fun. The vehicle selection is healthy. The game feels above average to race in. There’s lessons learned from Ghost in here about their previous games, and I can only hope Critereon can cooperate with them for the future to bring NFS back to its glory days. Pick it up if you loved underground and want a Forza-ish imagining of it. Just be aware it’s not perfect.
