I have never written a review on a game because I never felt so attached to any game and it devs that make me want to write a review but I really want the next iteration of Monster Hunter to learn from what Iceborne did wrong and hopefully improve on it.
~MILD SPOILER (if you can spoil anything in monster hunter)~
Iceborne feels like such a mix bag of good concepts and bad execution.
Clutch claw, in theory, could be a good side benefit – adding another tool that gives players more options for damage but the execution .. is just so bad. MR design puts way too much emphasis on tenderising the monster, which means hit zone values are just so bad that you HAVE to use it every minute and a half. Shoving a mechanic down a player throat is just not good game design, it makes it a chore and for a game that have 14 different gameplay styles to choose from… It just makes no sense as to why they would force this mechanic.
The monsters in base game are fine, most are well design and some should not even exist (lavasioth and lunastra) but iceborne monster design just seem that the developer just turn the aggressiveness of the monster up to 11. Monsters have less recovery animation, they can move from one combo to another so fast that by the time you even run up to him, you can knockdown or stunned, being punished just because.
Which means that hit and run tactics for melee weapons are just the defacto standard and ranged is even more broken just because you can just put shield mod and jewel on there and be as tanky as a lance user without any of the drawbacks(tenderising and HZV). Sure, you can still play melee but it just a waiting game, you’re waiting for a 2 second opening, you’re waiting for the monster to land, you’re waiting to have a big opening just so that you can pull off a combo. The amount of time I dealt damage compare to the time i spend waiting is just ridiculous, it just makes me ask why bother with melee when I could just use a HBG or LBG and not even touch the other 11 weapons.
Guiding Lands is a good concept but I have commitments and not much time as I used to have just so that I can just play the waiting game on when that one monster spawn just so I get closer to that armour or weapon. I had my reservation on multiplayer specified events, seeing as not many people I know plays MH franchise, but iceborne keep whispering to me to play with friends, from the god-knows-why deleveling of regions to the random spawns, It just want you to hunt in groups, share your guiding lands level, and I just hate it.
It’s such a mix bag, it really is. I like the concepts but how they execute it just feels like the devs are like “whatevs, we just want it in game no matter how bad it is”. It not to say that the devs are put no heart and soul into this game, they are still giving free updates whereas other companies would charge you a mortgage and your left liver just to have the “privilege” to pay more money in microtransaction . Sure, the optimisation and denuvo are much to be desired with, but the core game is still an amazing experience.
The review might come across as negative but MHW is the first game that I bought across 2 platform and have more than 1000 hours combined, 1000 hours which I would gladly give to experience this game over again. I don’t really like how steam review is just ‘do I recommend it or do I not’ because different strokes for different folks but as a new player sure, experience how I fell in love with my GOTY for 2018.
