Within Phase 1 of the Avengers, there have been 21 amazing movies (well, some of them were less amazing than others) that have all contributed to building a larger and more complex universe. Of them all, some movies stand out from the pack. We’re listing down our favourite MCU movies so far and will certainly be watching them once more before Avengers 4 or Endgame releases. Here’s the list:

1. Thor: Ragnarok

Thor: Ragnarok was amazing for so many different reasons. The first was the fact that is was hilarious. There wasn’t a dull moment in this fast-paced film and it left us wishing for more. The movie did a great job of expanding the alien universe in a way that characters or worlds felt fleshed out. This is something we’ve been expecting from Guardians of the Galaxy but have constantly been let down by more gimmicky aliens than actual well-thought-of worlds. Finally, the Hela was a great villain to watch and the eventual destruction of Asguard became a huge plot point.

2. Iron Man

This is where everything began. Iron Man marked a great start for the MCU and gave us a couple of characters that we love till date. Has there ever been a cooler moment than Tony Stark openly declaring “I am Iron Man” to the media? Masked superheroes are officially old news! Iron Man showed not only the origin story of this superhero, but also tied in world issues and global media coverage from the get-go – something that deeply impacted the Avengers in Captain America: Civil War. This just goes to show that MCU had always been intricately thought out from the start.

3. Captain America: Civil War

This movie was set in the aftermath of Avengers 2, and showed how government forces strongly opposed an independent branch of heroes. The willingness to work under the government led to the team breaking apart, with some people siding with Tony Stark and others siding with Cap. This is also the movie where we see the Black Panther for the first time. With all the Avengers fighting each other, the action was great and definitely exciting to watch. At least the two heroes did not stall their fight over a shared name (…and shots are fired).

4. Black Panther

Ok, it is virtually impossible to speak about the best MCU movies without talking about Black Panther. This movie not only gave us a new superhero to root for, but was also incredibly nuanced in its social commentary about the treatment of African-Americans in USA and the rest of the world. One of the things that made this movie so compelling was the fact that it was hard to disagree with the villain, Killmonger. Though he is ultimately defeated by T’Challa, there is a part inside us that feels bad for his demise and can’t help wishing he could also, somehow, rule.

5. Avengers: Infinity War

One of the biggest drawbacks of watching a superhero film is that all tension in the plot is superficial. No matter how many times something explodes, you know that your heroes will make it out alive. Avengers Infinity War blew this cliché into smithereens the minute Thanos snapped his giant fingers. We see all our favourite heroes turn to dust mid-action and it’s a great moment. The movie impacted all fans and everyone is waiting with baited breath for the next installment of the franchise, Avengers Endgame.
